Consistent quality for classes

This isn't our first time with LA Chess Club. We've done their weekly classes and a spring break camp before. This time I signed my younger son up for the beginner chess workshop. The quality of instruction has been consistent, which is why we keep coming back. Coaches are always patient and good at explaining things to the kids. No surprises, which is a good thing when you're dealing with kids' activities.

Smooth sign-up, great coaches

I registered my two kids for the scholastic tournament bundle. The website was pretty straightforward for signing up, no weird glitches or anything. It took about 3 days to get the confirmation email, which was fine. The tournament itself ran pretty smoothly, coaches were on hand to help with pairing and questions. My oldest even got a chess merit badge. Overall, a solid experience from registration to the actual event. Will probably sign them up again.

Good value on summer camp

I signed my daughter up for the summer chess camp. I was looking for something affordable since camps can get pricey. They had an early bird discount which saved us $40, so that was a nice bonus. Felt like a good deal for a full week of activities.

Fun weekly chess classes

My son started the weekly chess classes last month and he's really enjoying it. The coaches are good with kids, kept it fun. He learned some new moves and made a couple friends. Definitely a good after-school activity.

Private coaching was helpful

Booked private chess coaching for my son. Scheduling was easy online. Coach was good, helped him with his openings. Saw improvement quickly. Worth the cost.

Anyone know if LA Chess Club tournaments are USCF rated? My kid is getting good and we want to start tracking his progress officially.

D Donna M. 3 weeks ago
Most of their scholastic tournaments are USCF rated, yeah. That's why we go there.

Yes, many of them are. You can usually see it listed on the tournament details before you register.

Anyone know if you have to bring your own chess set for classes or tournaments there? Or do they provide them?

B Brian Phillips 1 week ago
For classes, they usually have everything you need. Tournaments, most people bring their own but they have some spares if you forget.

B Betty Jones 1 week ago
Nah, they got boards and pieces. Maybe for higher-level stuff you'd want your own weighted set, but for regular classes you're fine.

How's the refund policy at LA Chess Club? Thinking about signing up for an adult class but my work schedule is kinda unpredictable. Don't want to lose money if I have to drop out.

R Rachel Hall 3 weeks ago
I had to cancel a membership once, and it was pretty straightforward. They have a policy on their site, I think it's usually pro-rated or something depending on how far into the term you are.

You should check their official site, but I remember it being fair. Not like a full refund last minute but reasonable for early cancellations.

Just moved to LA and looking to get my son into chess. He's 7 and a total beginner. Is LA Chess Club suitable for really young kids who are just starting out?

D Danielle Ramirez 2 weeks ago
Absolutely, my daughter started there when she was 6 and knew nothing. They have specific beginner classes for younger kids. Coaches are super patient.

D Danielle Martin 2 weeks ago
Yep, definitely. They're big on scholastic stuff and have classes for all ages and skill levels, beginners included.

Hey, wondering if anyone knows if LA Chess Club offers any kind of discount if you're signing up more than one kid for a camp? Trying to get both mine into the summer program.

A Ashley Lee 1 week ago
Yeah, they totally do! I signed up my two for the spring break camp and there was a sibling discount applied automatically at checkout. Saved a decent chunk.

I think so, my friend mentioned getting one for her kids last year. It's usually like $10-50 off, depends on the camp length I guess.
